When the Kitchen Can Wait… The Backyard Is Up First!

When the Kitchen Can Wait… The Backyard Is Up First!

If you know me, you know I’m a little scatterbrained. And I might just have a touch of ADHD. Focusing on one project at a time? It is nearly impossible for me. The plan was to start with our kitchen makeover, but my brain decided otherwise. Instead, I found myself knee-deep in backyard vision boards and garden center trips.

Honestly, with the weather warming up and patio season in full swing, it started to make sense. So, the kitchen will just have to wait.

The yard with the tree removed

The Plan:

  • Take down a tree that’s overstayed its welcome

  • Re-sod the yard for that lush, green Bermuda look

  • Swap the outdoor light for a breezy ceiling fan

  • Add all new outdoor furniture

  • Install solar fence lighting to keep the vibes going after sunset

What’s Been Checked Off So Far:

  • The tree is gone

  • The ceiling fan has been installed and is already a total game changer

  • I’ve added a cozy outdoor setup:
     • A sofa and matching table for the uncovered patio area
     • Two oversized papasan rocking chairs that are just chef’s kiss

  • Solar Fence lighting has also been installed

What’s Left: Landscaping

Now we’re getting to the fun part: landscaping! Here’s what’s coming next:

  • The yard will be re-sodded with Bermuda grass. The shade from the tree I had removed killed all the grass that was there before. It will be great to have a nice, plush lawn again.

  • Three 4x4 raised bed boxes will be placed on the backyard hill, equally spaced, each featuring a beautiful sago palm right in the center. The hill will be covered with pine straw for a fresh, finished look.

  • On each side of the fence, I’m planning to add an 8x2 raised bed. Each one will have a bold, deep purple crepe myrtle tree in the center, flanked by caladiums and elephant ears on either side. It’s going to give color, drama, and a little tropical flair.

Stay tuned, I’ll be sharing progress pics as I continue to work on this area. Because let’s be real, DIY never goes 100% according to plan.  But that’s half the fun, right?

Let me know in the comments: would you have started with the kitchen or jumped into the backyard too?
