Creating a Home That Feels Like You, One Project at a Time

Creating a Home That Feels Like You, One Project at a Time

If there’s one thing I’ve learned over the last year, it’s this: creating a home that truly feels like you does not happen all at once. It’s not about rushing through a bunch of Pinterest boards or trying to keep up with what everyone else is doing. It’s about making thoughtful decisions, celebrating progress, no matter how slow, and giving yourself permission to pivot when life throws curveballs. And trust me, life has definitely been ‘lifing’ lately.

When the Backyard Took the Lead

Let’s talk about how the kitchen makeover got bumped from the front of the line.

I was all set to dive into the kitchen update. I even mapped out the plans in my Kitchen Glow-Up blog post: fresh paint, black fixtures, and a bold refresh that made the space feel more me. But then something unexpected happened, my neighbor mentioned they were getting a huge tree cut down, and the company offered a discount if we did both yards on the same day.

And you know I love a deal. So just like that, the backyard jumped ahead.

That decision snowballed into a full backyard glow-up that I absolutely don’t regret. It gave us a beautiful space to unwind, host guests, and soak up the vibes. But it also meant the kitchen refresh was put on pause, again.

Kitchen Update Mockup

Life Happens (and That’s Okay)

Once the backyard project took the lead, I figured it would get it done, then move on to the kitchen. But of course, real life had other plans.

First, the rain showed up like an uninvited guest and just wouldn't leave. Week after week, the weather pushed back progress and made it feel like the backyard update might never happen. Then came a heartbreaking family loss, followed closely by my trip to Greece. Two emotionally and mentally heavy events that took priority, rightfully so.

By the time I returned from my travels, it was finally time to wrap up the backyard. But let me tell you, it didn’t go quite as smoothly as I imagined. A mishap with the irrigation system meant I was left without running water for a day (well,  I had water in the tub and shower, so I made it work). It was one of those “just go with it” moments you don’t plan for.

But even with the delays and hiccups, when it was all done, it was worth it. The space came together beautifully, and I’m so glad I saw it through. Still, all of it meant that the kitchen refresh was pushed back yet again. Now though? It’s finally time to shift gears and pour that same energy into the heart of the home.

The Kitchen Glow-Up is Back On

The good news is: the vision is still there. And if you missed the original plans, here’s a quick recap of what’s in store:

  • Paint Color: A fresh coat of Greek Villa by Sherwin-Williams to brighten the space without it feeling sterile.

  • Cabinets: We're keeping the original pine cabinets, but giving them a cleaner look with new black hardware for contrast and modern flair.

  • Fixtures: Black faucet and cabinet pulls to ground the space and add sophistication.

  • Wallpaper: I’m adding a bold feature wall with black and white printed wallpaper. It’s going to add that extra layer of personality and flair that makes the space feel custom and unapologetically me.

  • Appliances: Black appliances are staying for now, but I’m looking at ways to make them feel more integrated.

  • Vibe: Warm, bold, and inviting. Like the best version of me in kitchen form.

This refresh isn’t about gutting everything or starting from scratch. It’s about working with what I have, being intentional, and creating a kitchen that makes me smile every time I walk in.

A Reminder for Anyone Tackling Their Own Projects

If you’ve ever had a project stall or life reroute your plans, know that you’re not alone. Whether you’re painting one wall or reimagining your whole space, every step counts. Your home should grow with you, reflect who you are right now, and leave room for who you’re becoming.

So here’s to getting back on track, and to creating a home that feels like you, one beautiful project at a time.
