From Athens to Mykonos: How I Traded My To-Do List for a Greek Island Glow-Up
Whew, I finally took the trip I’d been talking about for years. I traded in my overpacked to-do list for a suitcase and headed overseas for my first international vacation and first cruise ever. And what a ride it’s been!
Let’s get into the recap of my ‘Greek Island Glow’ adventure, starting with our arrival in Athens and wrapping up with a wild little detour through Mykonos.
📍 Athens, Greece: Jet Lag & History Lessons
We landed in Athens on Thursday afternoon after an overnight flight from the States. Exhausted but excited, we grabbed a bit of rest before heading out for a welcome dinner in the city. The food? Chef’s kiss. The vibe? Pure European summer.
Friday morning, we hit the ground running with a tour of the Acropolis and the Acropolis Museum. As someone who’s always loved Greek mythology, I thought I’d be geeked out the whole time. But baby, that heat said otherwise. It was like walking through an oven with ruins.
Still, seeing the Parthenon in real life was surreal. The scale, the history, the stone carved power, just wow. The museum was equally impressive, with marble sculptures and ancient artifacts that brought the mythology books of my childhood to life.
🛍️ Saturday Vibes: Retail Therapy Before Setting Sail
Saturday was reserved for a little retail therapy. We strolled through the Plaka district, cobbled streets lined with boutiques, handmade jewelry shops, and quaint cafes. Greece knows how to mix style and history like no other.
🚢 All Aboard! Virgin Voyages: The Resilient Lady
By Sunday, it was time to board our cruise ship, the Resilient Lady by Virgin Voyages. Modern, luxe, and adults only? Say less.

📍Santorini: Beautiful & Busy
Monday, we docked in Santorini, and yes, it’s as stunning as you’ve seen on Instagram.
Our day started in Oia, known for its picture perfect blue domed churches, whitewashed buildings, and cliffside views. The architecture is dreamy, the ocean views are breathtaking, and the sunlight makes everything glow like a postcard. But let me be real, it was packed. The narrow walkways were swarming with tourists, and every turn felt like a group photo waiting to happen.
From Oia, we made our way to Fira, a gorgeous town perched high above the sea. Getting to the top was a journey. We had the option of hiking up a massive staircase (think hundreds of steps), taking a cable car, or riding a donkey. And let me just say, those donkeys were funky. We made it up and explored the town, which had stunning views, cute shops, and more hills than my thighs were ready for.
Despite the crowds and cardio, Santorini is absolutely magical.

📍Rhodes: Resort Relaxation
Tuesday brought us to Rhodes, where we spent the day at the stunning Kallithea Springs. This was definitely a vibe. Think: Mediterranean glamour meets spa day dreams. The historic site is known for its natural springs, ornate mosaics, and domed pavilions, all set against a turquoise blue sea.
We lounged by the water, soaked up the sun, and just relaxed. No tours, no crowds, just pure peace. Kallithea Springs was a much needed slow down after the whirlwind of Athens and Santorini.
📍Bodrum, Turkey & Ancient Ephesus: A Step Back in Time
On Wednesday, our ship docked in Bodrum, Turkey, and from there we took a 3-hour bus ride to explore the ancient city of Ephesus.
Let me tell you, Ephesus is one of the most well-preserved ancient cities in the world. You’re walking on marble streets that date back thousands of years, past crumbling temples, a massive amphitheater, and the famous Library of Celsus, an architectural masterpiece that’s still standing proud.
After the city tour, we visited the House of the Virgin Mary, a peaceful little chapel believed to be the final home of the Virgin Mary. Whether you’re deeply religious or not, the site feels incredibly sacred and serene. People lit candles, wrote prayers, and took in the stillness of the space. It was beautiful.
⛱️ Thursday: A Day at Sea
After all the walking and history, Thursday was a much needed sea day. I found a quiet corner on the upper deck, book in hand, drink nearby, and just let the breeze carry me. We took dips in the pool, people watched, and indulged in doing absolutely nothing.
📍Mykonos: A Whole Vibe (Maybe Not My Vibe)
Our final two days were spent in Mykonos, and let me just say this island has a reputation. Known as Greece’s party capital, Mykonos is where the rich, famous, and turn-up-ready come to play. The beaches? Gorgeous. The energy? High. The party scene? Whew, outside of my age bracket, honey!
We kicked things off with a beach bash at a beach club, and while I appreciated the music, the drinks, and the scene, it was definitely giving spring break 2.0. I had a moment where I realized: "I like a vibe, not a rave."
After that, we found a much more chill rhythm, wandering the maze-like streets of Mykonos Town, popping into cute shops, and soaking in the classic white washed architecture and colorful shutters. Every corner looked like it belonged on a postcard.
The island is undeniably beautiful, with beaches that stretch on forever and a nightlife scene that draws people from all over the world. But as for me? I’ll take the soft life over the club life, any day.

✈️ Back to Athens & Back to Reality
After two whirlwind days in Mykonos, we returned to Athens to prepare for our journey home. My body was tired, my suitcase was full, but my heart? Completely full.
This trip was truly unforgettable, from ancient wonders and sparkling seas to a few unexpected “I’m too old for this” moments that gave me a good laugh. I’m so grateful I finally said yes to this adventure.
Would I cruise with Virgin Voyages again? In a heartbeat. The service, the experience, the destinations, it all felt like luxury with a twist of grown up fun. If you're looking for an adult escape with a bit of everything (including quiet moments, culture, and chaos), Virgin has it covered.
Final Thoughts:
Traveling internationally for the first time and cruising for the first time in one trip was a lot, but it was exactly what I needed. I hope this post inspires you to plan your trip too.
